Food gifts: how to make kite cookiesa

I have a to-do list and a cannot wait to-do list.  These were on the cannot wait list.  I’ve been dreaming of  cute little kite cookies with cute little tails for a very long time, and finally I got around to trying them out!

I have a to-do list and a cannot wait to-do list.  These were on the cannot wait list.  I’ve been dreaming of  cute little kite cookies with cute little tails for a very long time, and finally I got around to trying them out!
These were so easy to make.  For the kite cookie, any diamond shaped cutter will work, but I didn’t have one large enough, so I squished a square cutter until it was the right shape.
To make the kite part of the cookie you will need:
  • flood and piping icing in the color of your choice
  • coordinating sanding sugar {optional}
These cookies can be approached from several angles.  This time I decided to experiment with the dimensional look.  You could also flood the entire cookie and then add the lines.  I might do it this way the next time I make these.
First I use piping icing to divide the kite into four sections.
After the cookies are outlined, fill alternating sections.  Give that about 30 minutes to dry, then fill the rest of them.
Let these dry overnight.  This is a great time to put together your kite tails.

To make cookie kite tails you will need:
  • Colored ribbon
  • Twine; I got mine from The Twinery, and I LOVE IT!  If you cannot decide on a specific color, I recommend the Colorful Bunch Sampler Pack.
Cut the ribbon pieces that are a little less than two inches long and the twine into twelve inch lengths.
Then, tie the twine around the middle of each ribbon section to create the bows.   I have two tips to offer.  First, use a candle lighter to seal the edges of the ribbon so it won’t fray while you’re handling it.  Second, if you have a pair of free hands around, this would be a good time to ask for help.  With Bernie holding the ribbon, making these was a snap.
When you are finished, you will have a tail that looks like this
Before connecting the tails, I added a sanding sugar outline, however you can skip this step if you like.  If you want to go for it, you can view my how-to apply sanding sugar video HERE.
Once the cookies are completely dry, it’s time to secure them to the cookie.  Using white royal icing, pipe a small bit onto the back of the cookie near the bottom.  Then press the twine into the icing.
Immediately lay the cookie string side down on a clean sheet of waxed paper.  The reason for doing this is to ensure that the back layer of the icing dries flat.  The sting will be secure, but the RI will not stick to wax paper.  If you skip this step, the cookie probably won’t lay flat.
After they’re dry peel them from the paper, and you’ll have the cutest kite cookies you’ve ever seen!
These will FLY right off of your party table…
Have a great week everyone!

Unique felt crafts for banquet and more: sewing patterns

Citrus Coasters

Unique felt crafts for banquet and more: sewing patterns
Ever since the weather turned warm, I've had visions of pink lemonade and iced tea with lime wedges dancing in my head.  Summer also puts me in the mood to entertain so I thought it would be fun to have a set of coasters to match this citrus drink theme.

I love to have a summer sewing project that is portable so I can take it with me to the beach! Felt is often my material of choice for portable projects since it's ideal for hand sewing.  It's also great for making durable home items like these cheerful coasters.  For this project we used our Spring Felt Bundle because the bright colors reminded us of real citrus fruits.
I love that each coaster is slightly different from the next due to the handsewing. They will add a breezy, summery vibe to any table.  This is the kind of project you can do with very little experience since it requires absoultely no special skills or equipment.-- Molly

Materials

  • A Spring Felt Bundle
  • A Citrus Coaster Template, available for free download here, printed and cut out
  • Valdani Embroidery thread to match the colors of the felt bundle. I used colors 18, 10, 0244, 1212, and 45. You could also just use ecru on all of them if you don't mind seeing the stitches.

Cutting

For each coaster cut the felt as instructed on the template. You will have:
  • 2 large colored circles for the peel and the backing
  • 8 colored segments (4 cut from each segment template)
  • 1 ecru circle for the pith

Cut "seeds" out of two or three of the segment pieces by folding the segment piece in half lengthwise and then taking a small snip across the fold to take out a small triangular chunk out of the piece.

Sewing

Place the pith circle in the center of one of the colored circles. Then arrange the segments on top of the pith circle as shown above.

Pin all of these layers together.
Using thread to match the colored felt and a very small running stitch sew on the segment pieces around their edges.

Sew on all of the segments in this manner and press the piece flat.
Pin the other colored circle to the back of the piece.
Hiding the beginning knot in between the front and back colored circles sew the back on with the matching embroidery thread and a small running stitch all the way around the coaster.

Once you've gotten all the way around tie a small knot on the back piece and then pass the needle through the two layers and pull it out in the middle of the back. Snip the thread at the exit point thus hiding it.
Trim edges to make the front look nice and neat.

Repeat all steps to make 2 coasters from each of the colored felt pieces.

Gift graduation: mini grad cards tutorial

First of all, don't forget to enter my sewing box and matching pin cushion giveaway here. Promise you, you want to win this :)

It's that time of year again - graduation season. I don't know about you, but every year we know of quite a few graduates. To save money, and to add a personal touch to what is usually a card full of money, I made these mini graduation cards.

Gift graduation: mini grad cards tutorial
Making card
Here is what you will need to make these cute little cards:
  •  3x6 pieces of card stock

  • black and white card stock

  • embroidery thread

  • glue dots

  • brads

  • a template for your grad hats - I made mine by drawing a diamond for one piece. For the other piece I drew 3 lines - connected the top three lines with a straight line and connected the bottom three lines with curves.

  • scissors

  • stamp and black ink (not pictured)

1. Start by tracing and cutting out your hat pieces.
2. Insert a brad in the middle of your diamond piece, but not too tight. You can see in the picture above that there is a bit of gap - you will need that gap to fit the thread for your tassel.
3-6. Make the tassel for your hat by looping the embroidery thread around the brad, pulling it tight, and then cutting the threads to an even length.

7. Connect your two hat pieces with a glue dot.
In my original card plan, there was no sentiment (which is why the stamping materials are not pictured in the supplies list). After I saw the cards I knew they needed something else.
8. Stamp your sentiment on a piece of white card stock.
9. Cut the sentiments into long strips.
10. Fold the strips into banners.
Use glue dots to attach the hats and banners to the front of the cards and you are done! Simple, right? And I bet you have most, if not all, of the supplies on hand.
You can customize the cards to match school colors or to match your graduates favorite colors. Easy, fun, and personal - my favorite kind of project.
